Theatre Tax Relief

Behind every live production is significant investment in rehearsals, sets, costumes, technical crews, and production planning - long before the audience takes their seats.

Theatre Tax Relief (TTR) helps eligible production companies claim back a percentage of qualifying costs.

Whether you're a venue owner or operator, a touring show, or anyone else involved in putting on a performance, this relief may provide significant value to your business.

What is Theatre Tax Relief?

Theatre Tax Relief (TTR) is a UK government incentive designed to support companies producing live theatrical performances. Eligible companies can reduce their Corporation Tax liability or claim a cash payment from HMRC on qualifying production costs.

The relief applies to a wide range of productions, including:

  • Plays
  • Musicals
  • Operas
  • Ballets
  • Pantomimes
  • Touring productions
  • Dance performances
  • Children’s theatre
  • Dramatic live entertainment
  • Ticketed events

How Much Can You Claim?

Eligible theatre production companies can claim an additional Corporation Tax deduction worth up to 80% of qualifying core expenditure.

The amount you can receive depends on whether your production is touring (performed across multiple venues) or non-touring (performed mainly in one venue).

If your company is loss-making, some or all of those losses can be surrendered to HMRC for a payable cash credit of:

  • 40% for non-touring productions
  • 45% for touring productions

This means companies can potentially receive back up to:

  • 32% of qualifying core costs for non-touring productions
  • 36% of qualifying core costs for touring productions

Who Can Claim Theatre Tax Relief?

To qualify, your company must:

  • Be subject to UK Corporation Tax
  • Be responsible for producing, running, and closing the production
  • Directly pay for production costs
  • Be actively involved in creative and technical decision-making
  • Produce live theatrical performances intended for audiences.

    What Costs Qualify?

Theatre Tax Relief applies to core production expenditure directly related to producing and closing a theatrical production.

    Qualifying costs may include:

    • Rehearsals and production preparation
    • Cast, crew, and directors
    • Sets, costumes, and props
    • Lighting, sound, and technical production
    • Stage management and production equipment
    • Closing and dismantling costs

Costs such as marketing, legal fees, financing, storage, and general administration are usually excluded.

What Counts as a Touring Production?

A production may qualify as touring if performances take place across multiple venues.

HMRC generally considers productions touring where:

      • The intention is to perform at 6 or more venues, or
      • There are at least 14 performances across 2 or more venues

Productions that mainly perform in a single venue or fixed location are typically treated as non-touring productions.

Touring productions benefit from a higher rate of relief due to the additional logistical and operational costs involved.
