Marine Zero Limited

The Challenge

The maritime sector is increasingly investing in research and development, particularly when it comes to the SMEs that are enabling the sector’s transition to zero emissions. However, many of these businesses are often unaware that their pioneering efforts could qualify for R&D Tax Relief. They mistakenly assume that their projects are too small or not ‘innovative enough’ to meet HMRC’s criteria.

Marine Zero was initially unsure about whether their work developing hydrogen-powered vessels and sustainable port infrastructure would qualify. But through comprehensive assessment and close collaboration, our expert team helped to uncover the full scope of their qualifying activities, which included the complex engineering challenges of integrating hydrogen propulsion systems and refuelling infrastructure, as well as navigating the regulatory landscape to establish precedent-setting certification protocols.

From the ground-breaking Electric Thames project on the Thames, to the Falmouth Atlantic and Peninsula Clean Shore Power initiative in Cornwall, Marine Zero is pushing the boundaries of what is possible in clean maritime technology. We're proud to have helped them unlock the R&D tax relief they deserve (Read more about their projects here).

Partnering for a solution

The first step was a deep-dive discovery meeting so that our team could learn more about Marine Zero and its activities. This allowed our R&D consultants to gain a comprehensive understanding of their innovative work. We identified the key areas of eligible R&D activity and clearly explained how the entire process would be managed through our easy-to-use Claim Portal, simplifying each stage along the way.

The result

Throughout the process, we held regular follow-up meetings to ensure both the cost breakdown, and the technical report were accurately prepared and aligned with HMRC’s criteria.

We’re proud to have supported Marine Zero in reclaiming a portion of their R&D costs, an important first step in helping them continue investing in innovative projects that drive zero emissions solutions and protect the environment. We know this is just the beginning of a journey filled with impact and progress.

Electric Thames

Like most start-ups, our small team wears multiple hats and juggles countless priorities every day. Bringing in specialists to handle our R&D tax relief paperwork not only unlocked welcome entitlements – it freed us up to do what we do best – innovating and delivering for our customers.
