Audley End Enchanted Railway transformed its seasonal theatrical productions into a successful Theatre Tax Relief claim worth over £75,000. Read how the business identified qualifying expenditure, navigated eligibility requirements and reinvested the benefit into future theatrical experiences.

Audley End Enchanted Railway (AEER) operates a heritage railway and woodland attraction in Saffron Walden, Essex.
Alongside train rides through the estate’s woodland, the company produces seasonal theatrical shows designed for family audiences. These productions combine live stage performance, scripted storytelling, and immersive experiences, forming a central part of the visitor offering.
The company employs professional performers, directors, and technical staff to deliver high quality theatrical productions that meet the statutory definition of “theatrical production” for TTR purposes.
Each production followed a structured lifecycle, from creative development through to rehearsal, live performance and closing.
Activity included scriptwriting and direction, casting and rehearsal of performers, stage management, set design and construction, costume creation, and full technical delivery including lighting and sound. After each run, sets were dismantled and production elements closed down in line with theatre industry practice.

To qualify for Theatre Tax Relief, productions must be intended for live performance before an audience and meet specific statutory conditions. In this case, each show satisfied the definition of a theatrical production, with the vast majority of core production costs incurred within the UK.
Qualifying expenditure primarily related to the production and closing phases of each show. This included payments to actors, directors, stage managers and technical crew, as well as set build and installation, costume costs, rehearsal space and directly attributable venue expenses.
Operational costs such as marketing, catering, ticketing, railway operations and general site overheads were carefully identified and excluded to ensure the claim remained compliant.
As a heritage attraction operating year-round, one of the main challenges was clearly distinguishing theatrical production activity from wider commercial operations.
Detailed cost allocation was required due to its significant staffing, staging and technical requirements. Careful financial separation was essential to ensure accuracy.
The successful claim secured over £75,000 in Theatre Tax Relief for Audley End Enchanted Railway.
For the company, this has provided a significant improvement to post-event cash flow following its major seasonal productions, particularly the resource-intensive Christmas event. The relief supports reinvestment into future scripts, staging, technical delivery and performer engagement, helping AEER continue to develop high-quality, immersive theatrical experiences while maintaining financial sustainability within its heritage setting.
*The value of the claim reflected the company’s specific level of eligible production expenditure and the scope of its qualifying shows. As each production and business structure differs, outcomes will always vary depending on individual circumstances.
Easy R&D worked closely with AEER’s management team to review each production individually and prepare a robust claim.
Our role included confirming eligibility, analysing production-specific financial data, separating qualifying costs from general business expenditure, ensuring the submission aligned fully with HMRC guidance, and handling the post-submission liaison with HMRC. Clear production profit and loss reporting supported the claim process.

"Our experience collaborating with your team has been excellent. Throughout the Theatre Tax Relief claim process, everyone we worked with was responsive, informative, and clearly invested in achieving the best possible outcome for us.
In particular, Thorfinn, Natalia, and Greg were fantastic to work with. They were consistently proactive, approachable, and took the time to ensure we fully understood each stage of the process. Their genuine interest in our organisation and attention to detail gave us a great deal of confidence, and the level of communication and support exceeded our expectations.
Overall, the collaboration felt like a true partnership, and we would not hesitate to work with your team again or recommend your services to others."
