Inky Blackness

The innovation challenge

Inky Blackness wanted to expand its expertise in sound to explore its effects on humans, especially children with special needs. It was their goal was to develop a unique therapeutic solution to reduce stress and improve well-being using biofeedback from human heart rates to produce suitable sounds. This desire to expand into new territories led to a significant amount of time and resource being spent researching and trialling sound and music therapy for different benefits.

How Ian engaged with Easy R&D

Recommeded by to us by a fellow client, East End Prints, Inky Blackness founder, Ian Tregoning, dismissed making a claim at first. Ian is also the creative mind behind the company and so had his hands full running the business and the assumption, which was reinforced by their accountant, was that a claim for R&D tax relief would be timely, costly and complicated.

Our R&D tax consultant, Thorfinn Armstrong, was personally strongly recommended Ian’s colleague and so after much deliberating Ian made the call. Thorfinn was able to instantly reassure the Inky Blackness team that collaborating with Easy R&D meant that we would do the heavy-lifting, freeing Ian up to drive his business forward.

The first step taken by Thorfinn was a deep dive into all of the innovation projects, started, unfinished, failed and completed. Only by working to understand the intricacies of Inky Blackness’s business model could Thorfinn uncover the eligible expenditure. This thoroughness led them to a successful claim and gave Ian the confidence to entrust Easy R&D with all future claims for tax relief.

What can we learn from Ian and Inky Blackness?

  • Working with an R&D tax specialist makes all the difference. Expert tax advisors plus experienced technical writers means all of HMRC’s requirements are covered.
  • The scope of what HMRC defines as R&D is broad and ever-changing. Our specialist team has the experience and continuous training that allows them to uncover all eligible expenditure, something that your accountant or a general tax advisor may not be able to do so easily.
  • R&D that was not successful is still eligible to claim against. As is the nature of most R&D, it may take several before finding a viable solution.

If you’re a small to medium company in the UK, you could also be claiming back up to £33 on every £100 spent on R&D. The work you do that qualifies for the R&D tax credits scheme — often embedded in the day-to-day running of your business — may surprise you.
